What are Sphynx Cats?

Let’s be honest: That cute alien face and cute personality made you fall in love with her. The cats are so cool. After a while, you will start to like them and think about buying one.

Hairless cats are not a new arrival! Before the Sphynx cat breed existed, hairless cats were sporadically born. People have wondered about this for centuries. A 1903 book of cats is the answer. Due to spontaneous genetic mutations, hairless cats are often born to normal cats.

These animals are extremely sensitive to both heat and cold.

The first attempts to create a hairless breed began in the 1960s in Toronto, Canada; there, a hairless kitten was born to a pair of domestic shorthairs. That’s how the history of sphynx cats began. Prune, a young kitten, was sold to a breeder, who named the breed Canadian Hairless.

Their brilliant name comes from the mythical creature sphinx;  it’s been chosen due to the Sphynx cats’ sophisticated looks and graceful nature.

Breeders used Devon Rex and American Shorthair cats to enhance the Sphynx breed’s genetic diversity. Truth be told, Sphynx cats do look like hairless Devon Rex! Despite its unusual looks, the breed was quickly accepted by TICA in 1986. Most cat breeders welcomed this new and exotic-looking cat.

Sphynx cats are medium-sized but muscular cats. Males weigh between 8 and 11 pounds, while females are smaller,  but all of them are heavier than they appear! Sphynx cats have distinctive wedge-shaped heads, large to huge ears, and big, lemon-shaped eyes.

All these features give them a truly unique appearance! Moreover, most of them don’t have whiskers or have a few short whiskers;  this trait only enhances their royal aspect.

What Questions Should I Ask A Cat Breeder?

When you are looking to buy a Sphynx kitten, there are many things you should know beforehand. First, check if the breeder has licenses and permits to sell animals. Next, consider asking the breeder to show you the kittens’ vaccination records. After that, ask if the kitten is tested for genetic diseases such as Cushing’s disease. Ask the breeder about litter sizes and ages of kittens, and how much he charges for the kitten.

  • Does the breeder have health and temperament certifications?
  • Can the breeder provide references for both their cats and their owners?
  • What is the quality of their homes?
  • Do they use cages or foster homes for the kittens?
  • What are your cats’ pedigrees?
  • Are they socialized or not?
  • How do your cats behave in a group?
  • Are there any special needs or conditions that my cat will have if I buy him/her from your facility?

What is the Average Price of a Sphynx?

Which brings me to the next crucial question: how much do Sphynx cats cost? Quite a lot! Pet quality Sphynx kittens cost anywhere from 1800$ to 3000$ or even more,  depending on the cattery. Odd-eyed Sphynx cats are more expensive. Prices for show quality or breeder quality, or very rare kittens can be as high as 10000$.

As always, look for accredited breeders, and don’t go for lower prices.

Are Sphynx Cats Good Pets?

Sphynx cats are such special and unique-looking cats and make great family pets. They are fun to watch and make really amazing pets! And let me tell you, there are many reasons to get one!

Sphynx cats are wonderful companion animals because they can be trained to be extremely loyal and loving. They are often very social animals. They have a strong will and don’t like being left alone. As a result, they are very friendly towards strangers but should be socialized early on. You may find yourself having a lot of fun and laughing a lot when you are with your Sphynx cat.

If you want to own a cat that will be very cute, but is also easy to take care of, then you should consider getting a Sphynx cat.

The breeders we found provide kittens and adult sphynxes for sale and breeding. If you decide to adopt a cat from a breeder, you’ll be provided with a contract that specifies the terms and conditions of the adoption agreement. They usually provide the following items: a health certificate; a record of previous litters; pedigree documents, a sphynx care instruction guide, and more. Sphynx cats are very rare and very expensive, so the breeder must make sure that they are bred responsibly and they take good care of their cats.
